If STO and GW2 are any indication, once I moved out of the daily grind phase on each game, I never got back into it. But there is a part of me that also suspects that maybe I wonвЂ™t IвЂ™m not the type of person to get OUT OF a habit and later relapse into it. Will I re-subscribe to FFXIV? I tell myself that I likely will, especially with the new expansion Endwalker coming out in November. Even the deplorably-evil-ones are well-done they are so vile you canвЂ™t wait to kick their asses, but rarely are they forgettable. Many of the FFXIV villain characters are just as well-written - including some I had assumed were just EVIL BECAUSE, who turned out to be a lot more complex and relatable. Compared to support characters in other games like GW2 and STOвЂ¦. The portrayals of the characters are so excellent, and their importance to your main hero character is so vivid, itвЂ™s almost like leaving good friends behind. What makes it difficult is, once again, the excellent setting. I want a break to do something else, something different, and the best way to do it is to cut myself off. So while IвЂ™m not yet bored of FFXIV - far from it - I DO want to take a break from all the incessant, and admittedly self-imposed, grinding. I wonвЂ™t pay a monthly subscription and maybe turn on the game once a weekвЂ¦. How so? IвЂ™m well aware of my own nature, and I knew that if I were paying a monthly fee for a game, IвЂ™d want to get my moneyвЂ™s worth and play it to deathвЂ¦ and that is exactly what happened on FFXIV. That being said, IвЂ™m getting near to the end of the main story and hit many of the important side quests without these things, the daily and weekly grinds may be a lot less tolerable.Д«ut there is a lot of ME factor in it too. Sure, I have been hitting the daily roulettes (these dailies reward the highest XP and currency bonuses), the weekly challenges (including the Wondrous Tails), and even things I normally donвЂ™t touch on MMOs such as PvP actions, and I managed to power-level my character to level 80 in eight classes/jobs (out of a total of 18), but ultimately the excellent story missions never fails to entertain and engage. That being the case, I hammered at the game hard for the past four months, because (A) the story line kept me engaged, and (B) there are a lot of different activities I can do, and even after four months there are still stuff I havenвЂ™t even touched, so it hasnвЂ™t hit the point of boredom or repetitiveness. If I were to describe it, FFXIV is really a long, single-player game with MMO elements bolted on interactions with other players are purely incidental, and really only necessary when running raids to complete story missions. I have nothing but praise for it - yet at the same time, the multiplayer/community aspects never met my expectations. As I said before, FFXIV is a very polished, professionally-presented game, with a lot of things done right and a story line that is not only exceptionally well-crafted, well-presented, and well-acted, but also forms the backbone of the game.

For the moment, letвЂ™s put aside the fact that IвЂ™m still not convinced with that particular business model - a purchase AND a subscription? - I dove right in and played the game hard.

I started playing FFXIV at the beginning of May with a free trial, and decided I liked the game enough to purchase it as well as subscribe. Right now, IвЂ™m rushing to finish up the main story questline, trying to squeeze as much in as possible before Monday. In fact, I feel a twinge of sadness knowing IвЂ™m leaving my character and her world behind, which is a rather unique feeling when it comes to gaming. I made the decision not to renew my FFXIV subscription when it expires next Monday, but not because I no longer enjoy the game nor am I burnt out already.

I donвЂ™t want to sound all melodramatic about this we are just talking about a game, after all.
